Speed Week – Bonneville Salt Flats

30Aug10

One of the many hundreds of tents and RV's lining the perimeter of the race course at the Bonneville Salt Flats for the 2010 Speed Week in Wendover, Utah

The Bonneville Salt Flats is a place I’ve been to a few times, however never while any racing was going on.  It was quite the scene, very different from any auto race I’ve been to in the past, no frills, just insanely fast cars, as many RV’s as you’d see at Burning Man, vintage cars, vintage people, and…rednecks, lots and lots of rednecks.

A few fans near the start of the 7 mile "medium" race track.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to spend much time there so I didn’t really know the schedule and missed out on things like rocket cars, and an electric powered car breaking a land speed record reaching 307.66 MPH among many other things.  Another thing of note for those that haven’t been to a race out at the Bonneville Salt Flats, the racing itself is not exactly much of a spectator event, as the courses ranging from 1, 5, 7 and 14 miles don’t leave much for you to see.  What is great is the people and the cars themselves.  It’s definately worth the trip and I did get to see a lot of insane cars, the weird scene and of course being out on the salt is always an interesting experience!

Good stuff, does not look like an easy thing to shoot. Lot’s of hard sun, lot’s of white, fast cars and long distance….

Hey Bryan there is at least one more if not two more going on in September and October. Don’t remember who is putting them on but I’m sure you could find it with a quick search.

Who's linking?

Discount card is the way. Wingpointe, Bonnivelle, both Mountain Dell courses, some others but those are the good ones.

SLC discount card. Pay $75 ($50 w/usga membership) and you get 20% off of golf/range balls for a year.

I guess you haven't looked then. Most every course in the SLC area that is decent or good is under $50, even with a cart.

Oh yah. It said I'd get throttled down if I went over 3gb next month. Supposedly not until then though.
