I’m currently at Sun Valley, Idaho where I’ve spent a bit of time over the past few years with the Level 1 and 4Bi9 crews doing some park shoots both in winter, and in the spring after closing.  Since I’m here now I thought I’d post some of my favorite shots that didn’t make the cut for the magazines last year.  This one is of Ian Cosco during a shoot for Scott Sports & Monster Energy.  It’s not as apparent that it’s a shoot for Scott, as it is that Monster was involved with the shape of the jump…haha.  I hope you can pick that one up yourself.  Look for some more Sun Valley shots from last season to come through over the next few days.

We have a pretty epic view from the hotel room in Tokyo I’ve been staying at for the last four days.  Tonight was the best sunset of the four days to say the least.  Unfortunately, our crew is leaving tomorrow.  I’ll have an update in the next few days.

A few weeks ago I went out to Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, UT to help out Orlando Echeverria on his shoot for Modified Magazine of Aaron Brown’s Mitsubishi Evo 9.  Orlando’s shown me a bit with his camera rig shots and has a bit on his blog here of the behind the scenes.  As much as I’d love to be shooting my own rig shots, I haven’t committed to the investment of getting a proper rig, as they are quite expensive for me to do that right now!

Anyhoo, I finally got a chance to use some graduated neutral density filters, and take a car portrait out on the track so it was a pretty good day of new things for me.  I do have to say, driving my truck on a race track to get out to the shooting location was so so so painful……a truck, on a race track.  Yah.

A random funny potrait out-take from a shoot for Saga Outerwear’s web giveaway campaign back in July.  The shots they ended up going with were a bit more on the hectic and abrasive end so the more simple shots were more for fun.  Wiley’s hair was going big Spicoli style so thought we’d get a bit more entertaining with this one.  Another fun shoot as usual at the Saga offices.

Just a sunset and a dirt jump.  Too add to the list of new subjects to shoot this summer, today I gave mountain bike dirt jumping a go.  I came up to check out the jumps with Carston Oliver yesterday and was hoping we’d get a sunset today.  Just about 45 min before sunset the clouds broke so we ran up to the zone to give it a go.  Things turned out pretty well for my first go at it, lighting with dirt can be pretty tricky compared to the giant reflective canvas of snow that I’m used to.  It was pretty fun and I can’t wait to get another go at it.  Here’s what it looked like today, glad we made it out!

A few weeks before this shot was taken, I was at the exact same spot, shooting on a larger version of this jump with Poor Boyz Productions at Mt. Bachelor in Bend, Oregon.  We waited around for about a week for the weather to improve and it just never seemed to get the way we wanted so I bailed out for a few days down to Mammoth Mountain, CA to shoot with Level 1 Productions.  A few days later I came back up to Mt. Bachelor to shoot with Rage Films for another park shoot and I got the weather I was hoping for and the shoot went off.  It was one of those shoots where I got photos every day that ended up running in a mag somewhere.  Needless to say it was a good couple of days with a really fun crew of young up and coming kids.

After shooting on this jump in the morning we took a big break and came back just around 6pm to get going on this again to shoot around sunset.  Joe Schuster was one of the only ones that stuck it out about an hour after the last light was on the jump to wait and ski for the sunset photos.   I shot this scene with a pretty standard kit of lighting for me on a jump with an Elinchrom Ranger RX AS Speed with an A-Head, Alien Bees 800, Alien Bees 1600 along with my DIY battery packs with Pocket Wizard Plus 2 transcivers and a Nikon D3 with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 LD XR Di SP lens.
