One of the added benefits of shooting with Byron Wells is since he’s from New Zealand and their ski magazines come out in June I get to see my photos in print a lot earlier than waiting 6 months for the photos to run in the ski magazines up in the Northern Hemisphere. This year is no different except Byron’s a bit more prominent in the magazine this time! Apparently the cover has some pretty good detail treatment with a bunch of foil print on the text so I’m pretty excited to see it in person. This is a shot from 2010 in Park City in this little backcountry urban zone as I like to call it that crews have been milking for the past few seasons. The old mining buildings in this zone make for some pretty unique shooting opportunities. This shot has was actually a horizontal shot and was cropped quite a bit to fit the vertical cover. Just about every time I’ve shot urban with Byron, it’s something he hasn’t tried before, but we always end up getting shots. He’s one hard working kid that wants to get shots. Glad Byron finally has a cover shot down there. Check out the original below.

I get a lot of photo requests for some uses that are far from normal but this is definitely a new one. I sold a few shots to Line Skis last season with a one-year unlimited license. It’s when you have those licenses out on your photos is where you see some different types of usages. Different, but pretty cool. I’ve never had a photo on an air freshener! This shot of Will Wesson was taken last winter with Level 1 Productions in my backyard of Salt Lake City, Utah. It’s in the most played urban skiing location, probably in the world. I somehow manage to get a shot every year from the Rail Gardens (Olympus Hills Park) due mainly to skiers getting creative and looking for a new spin on the same structures in the park.
Do you have a photo on an air freshener? You should!
2011 PDN Photo Annual Finalist
03Jun11A few months ago Jussi Grznar reminded me about the PDN (Photo District News) Magazine Photo Annual. It’s something I’ve been wanting to enter for a while, but this year I finally had photos in the Scott Sports Tom Wallisch skiing ad campaign I was stoked on. Fast forward to this week and I finally picked up the copy of PDN Magazine to see it in print in the advertising side of the awards. It’s a big honor for me to be in this issue as it’s one of the most regarded publications within the photography industry and I’m one of the few action sports photographers that is represented in this issue and the only ski photographer. The last thing I would have expected was a jib ad to be in something like this! I’m usually trapped in the niche of action sports, and then hidden in the corner of that in the world of skiing so it’s an even bigger deal for me to be among all of the different genre’s of photography.
It’s been a pretty amazing winter for me and have had the opportunity to travel to a lot of cool places with good friends and have a lot to show for it. This has become the icing on the cake! It is now the second PDN photo contest I’ve had photos in, the first one being the 2009 PDN Top Knots wedding photography contest and hopefully not the last!
Check it out here at PDN’s website.
There were a ton of photos to be had during the Level 1 Productions ski terrain park shoot last season at Sun Valley, Idaho. Enough that some of my favorites didn’t make the cut for the magazines this publishing season. While we are currently waiting out the weather to shoot the massive volcano jump from the helicopter, some down time means blogging time!
This shot is of Phil Casabon shot with a Nikon D40, Nikon 70-200 f2.8 AF-S VR, at 1/1000 sec synced with two Elinchrom Ranger RX AS Speed w/A head kits and Pocket Wizard Multimax Transceivers.
I’ve been wanting to do some time lapses lately but it always seems that I have my D300 (second camera body) being used as a second remote angle being triggered by Pocket Wizards. I recently just got a GoPro HD and a pile of mounts so suddenly I have a camera to run time lapses when I have my camera bag emptied out throughout the mountain! I stuck the GoPro HD with a handlebar mount in the snow, turned it on, walked away. Pretty mellow. I was pretty suprised how well it came out. I had to do some post work on the photos like I normally would, cropped and put together in Quicktime Pro.
This jump session with Level 1 Productions in Sun Valley, ID went down pretty well and we got a lot of shots. Now we are just waiting for round 2 to shoot out of the helicopter!
I’ll hopefully have time to do this the rest of the spring through all the terrain park shoots.
I’m currently at Sun Valley, Idaho where I’ve spent a bit of time over the past few years with the Level 1 and 4Bi9 crews doing some park shoots both in winter, and in the spring after closing. Since I’m here now I thought I’d post some of my favorite shots that didn’t make the cut for the magazines last year. This one is of Ian Cosco during a shoot for Scott Sports & Monster Energy. It’s not as apparent that it’s a shoot for Scott, as it is that Monster was involved with the shape of the jump…haha. I hope you can pick that one up yourself. Look for some more Sun Valley shots from last season to come through over the next few days.

Salomon Poster – Matt Walker
14Jan11Another shot that came out of the Poor Boyz Production urban shoot in Montana last season. This one ended up being a poster of Matt Walker for Salomon Sports. This was another D40 shot from last season. I shot the 6mp D40 on this one to achieve full frame flash sync at 1/1250 sec. Not much time right now to expand on the description of what went down on this photo any more than that but wanted to put an update out.
Just pics this time around. Hope you all like em!
I’m back on the road again for a few weeks so it may be quiet on the front here. Follow me on Twitter to hear random entertaining antics from urban ski trips.

I’ve been out….
26Dec10Sorry for the lack of updates but it’s been a really busy early season for me. There’s been lots of snow in the good ol USA this season so far and because of it, I’ve been shooting a lot. Really, a lot. It’s not even the new year, and I’ve shot more days than I had at the end of February last season!…albeit, last season was a really low snow year. Out of the last 45 days, I’ve shot 30 of them, traveled on 5 of them, spent 8 of them in front of the computer editing and only 3 of them have been doing no work at all. Today has been one of those glorious 3 days off!
Anyhoo, I’ve been doing a lot of this:
And this….
So we can to places like this…
So I can shoot things like this…

So I can be around people that do this….

Headed out for another round of all that. I’ll be unplugged a bit for the next week or so. I hope I don’t have the time to make some updates, cause that means I’m getting it done!
