This is the final ad in the Tom Wallisch Scott Sports advertising campaign in the November issue of Freeskier Magazine. The Olympus quad kink in Salt Lake City, Utah is a rail I’ve been to three times since I’ve been shooting skiing, all pretty well failed attempts for me for various reasons and I’ve avoided shooting this rail in the past due to that. Of course with Tom, it became a different story as the disaster on made it very much worthwhile. The weather also came together for us on this one as well since my favorite thing to do is shooting strobed photos while it’s snowing. It just fills the frame so much better and gives a feel of winter to the scene.

The previous attempts failed mostly because of speed and my ignorance at the time to how much speed is required for such a mellow, long rail. With the 4Bi9 crew though, we had a ton of people to help, and that included some people to drive a car for a tow-in so we had all the speed in the world here.

I got a rare chance a few weeks ago to shoot some snowboarding. It was pretty sick to be at the Snowboard Grand Prix at Park City Mountain Resort since it was the last event for the US Snowboard Olympic team selection. It was a really big deal, and it was really nuking all through the comp. Now, although the heavy snowfall isn’t so good for the athletes, it’s something I’ve grown to love while shooting at night. The heavy snowfall just adds so much to the shots, I just love it. I went pretty basic on lighting at this event, as the hot lights they brought in for this event were actually pretty good. Just had an Alien Bee 800 and Alien Bee 400 with me. I got to leave the big Elinchrom Ranger at home for the contest, I was pretty pumped about not hauling the big daddy up for this one! I was pretty amazed as to how well my D300 did during this event. At a pipe event I usually bring two camera bodies up with me, one with a wide or short zoom and one with the 70-200 on it. With the event hot lights I wasn’t sure if the D300 was going to do as well at the high ISO ranges of 1600-3200 that I was shooting at, but it did really well. I knew my D3 was going to do great but how well the D300 did was a pretty nice surprise.

I haven’t blogged much lately, I’ve been trying to get after it so here’s a post with just some photos I liked from the event. I hope you dig.

Winter is coming. At home in Utah we had a early bout of winter but again, Fall has prevailed and it’s warmed up a bit before the next storm rolls through. Hopefully that next storm will to flip the switch from fall to winter. The seven months that lie ahead of me are full of snowy roads, planes, sharing two bed hotel rooms with four to ten smelly dudes, being stuffed into rental cars overloaded with gear, all so I get to shoot ski photos all winter. Yes, I’m looking forward to this.

This time of year is always a mixed bag of feelings. I’m excited to ski, shoot in the snow, spend a bunch of time with good friends and get my season going, but I’m dreading the long drives on sketchy, snowy, icy roads. I’m pretty optimistic this season is going to be a good one for me though. I’m coming off the best Winter I had with my photography so I’m really looking forward to see what this season holds for me.

I’ve already had a few super fun days out shooting some skiing this season, a bit of pre-season mini-shred with Alex Schlopy, Joss Christiansen, Giray Dadali and Will Wesson. Unfortunately I didn’t get out to ski during the early October storms we had here but the mini-shred shooting in Park City, Alta and yesterday at Brighton. We’ve done everything from backflip jumps on snowmaking piles, handrails, a pre-season jib park at Brighton and of course, we got kicked out of our first completely harmless urban jib already.

Lots of people did however get out and shred the early snow, and looking at the photos here that Teton Gravity Research cinemetographer Pete O’Brien got, I do wish I could have gone out and gotten some early turns in. Check it out here.

Of course, in Colorado the snowguns have been pounding out the ribbon of death since September but this fall, Keystone Resort stepped it up huge and for whatever reason has been sending it with the snowmaking and the Area-51 terrain park opened with a top to bottom park complete with JUMPS! Photographer Nate Abbott shot a bit of that and has a story about it here at www.espn.com/action website.

So here we go, Winter is coming. Or, maybe it’s here already. It just depends where you call home. My first shooting trip of the season is tentatively two weeks away. It’s almost go time for me. I leave you with a photo from my first shooting trip of last season to Grand Rapids, Michigan with Mike Hornbeck, Henrik Harlaut and Ahmet Dadali with Level 1 Productions about the same time as my upcoming trip in a few weeks.
