Freeskiing Magazine (Japan) Cover

07Feb13

Freeskiing Magazine (Japan) Cover - Mike HornbeckSometimes I get the photo how I want pretty quickly, and sometimes, like this time it took a second trip, and a few more hours before I was able to figure out how to light this one.   To add to this, it took two days, a new motor, and a ton of frustration until we were able to get the winch cranking fast enough to allow the skiers to get the tricks they wanted.  There’s always that first jib feature of the trip that gets me shaking my head, thinking “you fuckers are crazy.”  Well, this was it.  Mike Hornbeck, sliding up, around and back down on this ledge was pretty nuts.  I don’t always get to shoot near sunset but fortunately on January 3rd in Anchorage, Alaska, we had about an hour and a half of this kind of sky, which is pretty damn awesome when you’re trying to get just the right shot, on such a difficult feature for the skiers to get.

This is the time of year when I get really excited, then really disappointed at the same time.  The photo annuals carry some of the best images of the year and every year my anticipation for what I could have in these issues grows as things get closer.  I see my shots, I don’t see shots I hoped I’d have in there, and then there’s everyone else’s work, typically from Mattias Fredriksson, Jordan Manley, Blake Jorgenson, Nate Abbott, Bryn Hughes, Christian PondellaAlex O’Brien, Adam Clark, Grant Gunderson, Steve LloydTero Repo, and with the new blood with guys like Darcy Bacha, Garrett Grove and Jim Harris.  I see everyone else’s shots thinking how the hell did they pull that off, why the hell did I never think of that, those crazy bastards, or the one that gets me the most, I tried that, and I couldn’t pull it off.  Regardless of seeing others pull off what I couldn’t figure out I’m always stoked to see great work, shots that make me think about how they pulled it off, where they had to go to get the shots, and of course the ones that drive me to try and come up with new ideas as well.  This year’s images in the Photo Annuals were the same in those ways, but this season was especially a great collection of images as Powder Magazine’s photo annual was simply massive.  Seeing all that great work in one place, it’s pretty rad and I’m glad to be a part of it.

Below are my images in the Photo Annual’s of both Powder and Freeskier Magazines.  Thanks for looking!

National Geographic Adventure

08Dec11

About the last thing I’d ever expected was to have a urban skiing photo in National Geographic.  Well, that day has come and it’s a pretty cool one.  It’s not in the magazine, it’s just their “Extreme Photo of The Week”  but hey, I don’t care it’s just cool.  This shot of Nick Martini at Powder Mountain during a Poor Boyz Productions shoot last season was recently in the January issue of Powder Magazine but National Geographic Adventure picked it up for their website.

Check it out when you get a chance here:  http://adventure.nationalgeographic.com/adventure/extreme-photo-of-the-week/#/powder-mountain-resort_44791_600x450.jpg

1st cover of the season rolls through! Byron Wells – New Zealand Ski and Snow

23Jun11

One of the added benefits of shooting with Byron Wells is since he’s from New Zealand and their ski magazines come out in June I get to see my photos in print a lot earlier than waiting 6 months for the photos to run in the ski magazines up in the Northern Hemisphere.  This year is no different except Byron’s a bit more prominent in the magazine this time!  Apparently the cover has some pretty good detail treatment with a bunch of foil print on the text so I’m pretty excited to see it in person.  This is a shot from 2010 in Park City in this little backcountry urban zone as I like to call it that crews have been milking for the past few seasons.  The old mining buildings in this zone make for some pretty unique shooting opportunities.  This shot has was actually a horizontal shot and was cropped quite a bit to fit the vertical cover.  Just about every time I’ve shot urban with Byron, it’s something he hasn’t tried before, but we always end up getting shots.  He’s one hard working kid that wants to get shots.  Glad Byron finally has a cover shot down there.  Check out the original below.

Keep it fresh! – Air Freshener photos?

10Jun11

I get a lot of photo requests for some uses that are far from normal but this is definitely a new one.  I sold a few shots to Line Skis last season with a one-year unlimited license.  It’s when you have those licenses out on your photos is where you see some different types of usages.  Different, but pretty cool.  I’ve never had a photo on an air freshener!  This shot of Will Wesson was taken last winter with Level 1 Productions in my backyard of Salt Lake City, Utah.  It’s in the most played urban skiing location, probably in the world.  I somehow manage to get a shot every year from the Rail Gardens (Olympus Hills Park) due mainly to skiers getting creative and looking for a new spin on the same structures in the park.

Do you have a photo on an air freshener?  You should!

Sun Valley 2010 – The Cutting Room Floor – Part 1

22Apr11

I’m currently at Sun Valley, Idaho where I’ve spent a bit of time over the past few years with the Level 1 and 4Bi9 crews doing some park shoots both in winter, and in the spring after closing.  Since I’m here now I thought I’d post some of my favorite shots that didn’t make the cut for the magazines last year.  This one is of Ian Cosco during a shoot for Scott Sports & Monster Energy.  It’s not as apparent that it’s a shoot for Scott, as it is that Monster was involved with the shape of the jump…haha.  I hope you can pick that one up yourself.  Look for some more Sun Valley shots from last season to come through over the next few days.
