One of the added benefits of shooting with Byron Wells is since he’s from New Zealand and their ski magazines come out in June I get to see my photos in print a lot earlier than waiting 6 months for the photos to run in the ski magazines up in the Northern Hemisphere. This year is no different except Byron’s a bit more prominent in the magazine this time! Apparently the cover has some pretty good detail treatment with a bunch of foil print on the text so I’m pretty excited to see it in person. This is a shot from 2010 in Park City in this little backcountry urban zone as I like to call it that crews have been milking for the past few seasons. The old mining buildings in this zone make for some pretty unique shooting opportunities. This shot has was actually a horizontal shot and was cropped quite a bit to fit the vertical cover. Just about every time I’ve shot urban with Byron, it’s something he hasn’t tried before, but we always end up getting shots. He’s one hard working kid that wants to get shots. Glad Byron finally has a cover shot down there. Check out the original below.

Two years, two covers with Powderhound Magazine. This year it’s Anna Segal at The Canyons Resort in Park City, Utah. I’ve been working with Powderhound Magazine for 4 seasons now, since I started shooting with the Aussies, mainly Anna Segal and Davina Williams. This photo was one I had completely planned out before shooting it. From the angle to the weather, skier, lighting, even the trick I wanted on it. It didn’t completely work out to design, the natural light wasn’t quite as dark as I wanted it to be, however the two inches an hour of snowfall we were getting did work to make the shot look cold and wintry.
This was actually one of the mellower shoots of the season. No film crew, no crew of skiers, just myself and Anna and we were in and out in about an hour. I don’t get to do that very often, to be on a shoot with no film crew, just myself and being able to go wherever I want in order to get the shot I want. It makes work so much easier when I get to do this!
This time of year is always a good pick me up as the magazine publication schedule in Australia and New Zealand is quite a bit earlier with the opposite seasons so I get to see shots published while I’m still shooting during the spring terrain park shoots!

Sundance Film Festival is here
22Jan10One of the busiest times of the year is apon me. The Sundance Film Festival has begun. It’s the time of year where I usually put my ski gear down, bite the bullet put my head down and go on paparatzi mode. This year is a bit different though. As opposed to the regular work covering random events for WireImage.com I’m covering the events put on by G-Tech by Hitachi. G-tech and Hitachi are putting on panels that are showcasing not just their products but on film ind photography. There will be a panel in a few days showing off some of the RED video products as well as 3d shootin with 2 cameras as well as some things on the photography side. I’m stoked to be doing Sundance work along side some like minded people instead of the usual Sundance crowd.
I’m also spending some time shootng the USSA Snowboard Gran Prix at Park City Mountain Resort which will keep me out of the Sundance scene for a few days and get me on-mountain a bit. I usually don’t get to spend any time on-mountain during the festival so this unusual Sundance for me should be the best one I’ve been a part of in the seven years I’ve covered it.
A few months ago, Eric Woodruff let me know he was getting married and talked with me about shooting photos for his wedding. I was pretty excited to do so, I used to work with Eric back in the day when I was at The Canyons Resort as the photo/web/video guy there for a few years. He’s one of the nicest guy’s I know so I knew it would be fun, getting to meet, shoot, and party with a bunch of good new people. Just like the last wedding I shot, everyone danced a lot and late into the night, including the parents. Another thing I was pretty stoked about was that Eric and Kary wanted more candid photos, instead of setup portraits. These are usually a lot more fun, especially with a fun crowd that we had there and working when it’s fun is always a bonus!

NEW WEBSITE!
14Aug08
I’ve spent past 2 weeks going through development on my new site, it is live and operational! I used to do websites for a living before the days of photography so building my own has always been a painful process to go back and do that stuff again! I am stoked with how it turned out, and I hope everyone likes it.
I will be adding more to the site in the next few weeks and in the future as this new site is much easier to update!
