This is the time of year when I get really excited, then really disappointed at the same time.  The photo annuals carry some of the best images of the year and every year my anticipation for what I could have in these issues grows as things get closer.  I see my shots, I don’t see shots I hoped I’d have in there, and then there’s everyone else’s work, typically from Mattias Fredriksson, Jordan Manley, Blake Jorgenson, Nate Abbott, Bryn Hughes, Christian PondellaAlex O’Brien, Adam Clark, Grant Gunderson, Steve LloydTero Repo, and with the new blood with guys like Darcy Bacha, Garrett Grove and Jim Harris.  I see everyone else’s shots thinking how the hell did they pull that off, why the hell did I never think of that, those crazy bastards, or the one that gets me the most, I tried that, and I couldn’t pull it off.  Regardless of seeing others pull off what I couldn’t figure out I’m always stoked to see great work, shots that make me think about how they pulled it off, where they had to go to get the shots, and of course the ones that drive me to try and come up with new ideas as well.  This year’s images in the Photo Annuals were the same in those ways, but this season was especially a great collection of images as Powder Magazine’s photo annual was simply massive.  Seeing all that great work in one place, it’s pretty rad and I’m glad to be a part of it.

Below are my images in the Photo Annual’s of both Powder and Freeskier Magazines.  Thanks for looking!

Powder Magazine – September / October 2011

20Oct11

Things are a bit busy right now and I haven’t had the time I hoped to have to spend on the blog.  I’ll have a few things in the next few weeks but for now here’s a few recently published photos in Powder Magazine this season so far including the UK feature “Carry That Weight”.  Hope you dig it.

I just got some pdf’s of the recent shots I’ve had over in Powder Magazine this season so I thought I’d share.

Josh Stack explaining to LJ Strenio, how to be a professional skier
This is probably my most favorite thing ever written in a ski magazine.  I’m pretty stoked my photo fit it rather perfectly.  Check it out if you get a chance.

The Gathering – Day 1 – Red Mountain, Rossland, BC

08Apr10

The Gathering

The Gathering started last season as an even put on by Powder Magazine and Red Mountain Resort in Rossland, BC to bring back together the group of people that started the way of life I get to live as a professional ski photographer.  This was one of those things I got to go to that was quite an honor for me.  I was picked by Powder Magazine to rep the new generation of ski photographers along with Jordan Manley and Christian Pondella.  It was quite the motley crew there ranging from the OG crew of photographers, the younger photographers, mountain guides, writers and of course some of the crew from Powder.

Derek Spong jumping a hip jump at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon - Rage FI did another making of the photo interview with Sam from Powder Magazine for their November 2009 Shooting Gallery monthly feature on their website.  This shot is of Derek Spong doing a corked 7 off a hip jump on the Outback side at Mt. Tim Russell and Wiley Miller from the October 2009 Powder Magazine Shooting Gallery

Powder Magazine’s website is starting with the current October 2009 issue and doing a making the photo feature, interviewing the photographers featured in the Shooting Gallery of each issue.  We talk about the making of the photo and any other little tidbits from the day we shot the photo.  They’ve done one with me for each of the two photos I have in the current issue of Powder Magazine.  In this installment of it I talk a bit about the fence jib shot of Tim Russell and the shot of Wiley Miller on Rocker Gap at Guardsman Pass, Utah.  Check it out here

Also, similar to the making of the photos, I have an interview about my cover shot including some audio of the interview from the October 2009 issue of Powder, the same one with the Shooting Gallery interviews.  Check that interview here

Powder Magazine Cover - October, 2009 - Skier: Tanner Hall - Location: Park City Mountain Resort, UT

This is the one I wondered if I’d ever get.  I’ve had covers outside of North America for a few years now and last season got my first one with SBC Skier Magazine out of Canada but still had yet to get one in the country I live in.  It became a running joke actually with some of my colleagues that I’m huge in Japan or whatever.  I didn’t think I’d get one for a while in the USA, especially Powder as most of what I shoot is really jib/freestyle heavy.  I found out about a month ago and it hadn’t really hit me as being that big of a deal until today.  This was literally a childhood dream.  I remember looking reading every Powder magazine that came through growing up and looking at the photos of Paul Morrison, Scott Markewitz, Lee Cohen, Hank DeVre, Mark Gallup, Wade McCoy and Mark Shapiro thinking about how cool it would be to have a photo of mine on the cover of Powder.
