This is the final ad in the Tom Wallisch Scott Sports advertising campaign in the November issue of Freeskier Magazine.  The Olympus quad kink in Salt Lake City, Utah is a rail I’ve been to three times since I’ve been shooting skiing, all pretty well failed attempts for me for various reasons and I’ve avoided shooting this rail in the past due to that.  Of course with Tom, it became a different story as the disaster on made it very much worthwhile.  The weather also came together for us on this one as well since my favorite thing to do is shooting strobed photos while it’s snowing.  It just fills the frame so much better and gives a feel of winter to the scene.

The previous attempts failed mostly because of speed and my ignorance at the time to how much speed is required for such a mellow, long rail.  With the 4Bi9 crew though, we had a ton of people to help, and that included some people to drive a car for a tow-in so we had all the speed in the world here.

Ad 2 of 3 in a Scott campaign of Tom Wallisch - October 2010 Freeskier Magazine

This was the 2nd of 3 ads for a Scott campaign featuring their top freeskier, Tom Wallisch (check out the first ad here).  I worked with Tom a lot this season specifically for this campaign and I’m pretty stoked on the shots and that it was based on what we both wanted to shoot as opposed to being confined to a creative breif.  It was a go out, get some epic shots and we will work with it in the end.  It allowed us to produce the best shots we could, which is something I’m stoked on.  You can’t really ask for much more but a blank canvas.

This shot in particular was the primary reason I came out to Minnesota for that trip with Level 1 Produtions.  I knew that feature would produce something I’d be stoked on and it was something I could really spend time with the lighting on.  It was a miserably cold night for the whole crew of myself, Kyle Decker (Filmer for Level 1), Tom Wallisch, Ahmet Dadali and Liam Downey and we had some challenges with some equipment and being extremely visable from a major road but everyone got their tricks, their shots and it was one extremely productive day/night.

The big show – Scott / Monster Weekend – Day 3

04Apr10

The SPT crew putting the finishing touches on the giant claw jump

After all the activities and hype the day finally came to shoot on the giant Monster claw jump.  A radio show, poster signings, shotgunning Monster Energy drinks, entertaining hammered drunk locals, redneck truck stop shopping and a urban handrail session later the time for the big show was finally upon us.

The Hype – Scott / Monster shoot in Sun Valley – Day 2

25Mar10

An excited fan gets in on the autograph sesh with Justin Dorey

Day 2 of the Scott / Monster weekend in Sun Valley has come and gone.  Friday started with Tom Wallisch forgetting about the redneck flair factor and failed to wake up with his “Daddy’s Angel” bracelet on and the mandatory shotgun a 16 oz. Monster Energy drink happened.  After a jittery start to the day for Tom the rest of Friday was a hype day for the big jump show the following day with radio shows, poster signings and an urban session with the 4Bi9 film crew would ensue.  The radio show was pretty short lived but in true Chug Life fashion Ian Cosco belted out a “cheaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa” while the rest of the boys took to the air waves.

The road to Idaho is full of stops.  This one happened to be a redneck’s dream full of bad taste in Twin Falls, ID.

Scott USA Ad – Tim Russell

15Nov08

Scott USA Ad - Tim RussellSo why not, Winter is coming and I just posted the other recent ad for Scott USA of Justin Dorey.  Here’s the first Scott ad of mine from this season of Tim Russell.  I was kind of on a theme of shooting what I’d like to call “backcounty urban” this season.  While it’s completely an oxymoron it’s one of the only ways I can think of to describe a lot of what I shot this past ski season that was really successful for me.  It was urban-type features, but out in the middle of nowhere in the backcountry, usually snowmobile accessed.  Most of these shots required a ton of work to get all the lighting equipment out there and for me to get out since I’m not exactly a sledneck!

This shot of Tim Russell was out on this shack that I shot on previously the season before but came back to it with a different approach.  I’m pumped with how it turned out in print, especially since it was a crop of just a 6 megapixel shot.

Scott USA Ad – Justin Dorey – Freeskier Magazine – December 2008

13Nov08

Justin Dorey - Scott USA Ad - Freeskier Magazine - December 2008It’s been quite a while since my last blog post so I thought I’d put something recent up.  Here’s the 2nd Scott USA ad this season with one of my photos.   It’s in the December 2008 issue of Freeskier Magazine.  This shot came from a Level 1 Productions shoot at Copper Mountain, Colorado last Spring.  I look forward to this shoot every season beceause Copper always builds us some great terrain park features that I always get shots on, some of the best of the season.   For this particular day, Copper cut out two 20 foot wide gaps in the walls of the Superpipe.  Justin Dorey was doing some huge alleyoop flatspin 540’s across the transfer gap.
